Pauter machine - chula vista, ca

Established in 1952 as an aircraft job shop/tool & die shop, Pauter Machine Company has been manufacturing high quality racing products since the mid-sixties. Our commitment from the start was to provide our customers with a superior level of quality, product innovation, customer service, and satisfaction.

Beginning in the mid-eighties, the exciting capabilities presented by CNC and CAD technology could not be ignored. We climbed aboard and went for a ride. And it has been a ride worth taking. Products, concepts, tooling, quality control, labor costs, etc., have all benefited from this technology. And in the end, it has been you - the high performance customer - who has benefited the most.

Years of hands-on experience, working with rods of all shapes and materials, of all types of racing and racing-related abuse, with design failures (and successes), has resulted in a fairly comprehensive file on just what works - and what doesn't - on the subject of high performance connecting rods. From this body of knowledge we have selected and incorporated the elements into what it is we think a great rod should be. Right off, our rod looks different, that's obvious, but for some not so obvious and very good reasons.

For starters, the simple beam design completely eliminates thin and non-uniform cross sections over the total length of the beam. This feature greatly improves resistance to crack-induced metal fatigue. In addition, the non-tapered profile of the beam helps to spread potentially harmful stress over a larger area, dispersing instead of concentrating these destructive loads. The design also efficiently places needed material in critical transitional areas, giving maximum support exactly where it is needed (such as directly under the wrist pin). The streamlined contour also provides subtle benefits in the form of windage reduction. The main beam rib itself continues around the wrist pin boss, perfectly integrating the beam to the pin boss, a small, but important contribution to overall structural unity. Pauter rods are indeed, different by design.

Alex’s 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi - 678whp

“The dyno is a Dynapack 3500 owned by Slow Motion in Ohio.

This STI had once before been tuned by me to just under 600 whp and ran a quarter mile time of 11.0 @ 135.5 mph without N20. I feel the Dynajet I normally use reads on the low side or the car simply picked up a little more power in the real world. Fast forward a few months and some new modifications were performed. The heads and block were decked to get a better seal on the head gasket. I requested that the thinnest head gasket be used so we could benefit from the slight increase in compression ratio. An unequal length header was also installed, along with a fresh GT35R 1.06 turbocharger. The engine is an Axis Power Racing engine but still uses the stock block and the heads are ported with larger valves and 272 cams.

Here’s a quick list of mods:

Axis Power Racing STI engine (rods, pistons, stock block)

Axis Power Racing STI heads (bigger valves, porting, springs, 272 cams, no AVCS)

Element STI Hydra EMS (custom tuned by Element)

1000cc injectors

Aeromotive Fuel pump

Unequal length header

GT35R 1.06 AR

Here’s the interesting part, with those modifications, 2 psi more boost (29.2 vs 27 absolute), and more tuning, we hit about 648 whp. So where did the extra power come from? Removing the intake completely and bypassing the power steering pump netted 30 whp more at this power level. Unfortunately we did not test these two items separately but I suspect the majority of the gain was from the removal of the air filter.

Tuning was what I consider moderately aggressive but at this power level we didn’t want to push beyond this point. The AFR was 12:1, boost was 29.2 psi (absolute), and ignition timing peaked at 26 degrees. The 1000cc injectors hit a peak of 98% duty cycle.

Thanks,

Phil

“Well I would say that today was a success. The car ran well. the only issue was the trans brake was not working so the launch was non existent. All I could do was to pull up to the line and when the light turned green put the pedal down. The best time of the day went as follows -

60' 2.19

E.T. 10.85

MPH 142.89

This run was done at 18.4 peak boost shifting at 7100 RPM. I felt very good about these times in view of the circumstances. My first run of the day the car went 11.4 @ 129mph on 13 psi so the car picked up a ton of mph with just 5 psi more boost and I am planning on taking it to 25 - 28 psi once I get it tuned to that pressure.

“After a long painful road, I was finally able to get my Scooby into the 10’s. I have been trying to ring that bell for a very long time, really takes a lot of time, energy, and patience. I can finally rest, at least until spring rolls around.

There is a very long list of people that helped me achieve this goal, beginning with TopSpeed. Doug deserves a lot of credit for tuning my car, also responsible for the installation of everything. Thanks D, you da man! Next on the list is Ron from Axis, my car is powered by one of his complete long blocks, great guy to work with. Andrewtech, Phil from Element tuning, and my local suby dealer Koby all helped with this project, thanks to all!”  560whp dyno pull
